(Sr) Scientist – Discovery Biology (MA)

Job Description
Semma Therapeutics is a biotechnology company focused on developing innovative and potentially curative cell therapies for serious diseases including Type 1 diabetes. The company is seeking an outstanding stem cell or islet biologist to join its growing team. The full-time role will focus on islet cell differentiation and molecular and cellular characterization. The scientist will be responsible for both the strategic direction and day-to-day execution of specific projects related to developing next generation technologies for Semma. The position will be located in Cambridge, MA (Kendall Square).


  • Lead the design, laboratory execution and analysis of experiments designed to develop next generation islet and other cell therapies
  • Perform cell culture and optimization of directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells
  • Identify and implement new technologies and assays for the in vitro characterization of stem cell-derived islets and other cell types
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records, and author and review study protocols, technical reports, presentations, and other documents
  • Collaborate within the cell R&D team and across other departments at Semma

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in cell biology, bioengineering or related discipline
  • 2 - 5 years of biotech, pharma or postdoctoral fellowship experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in planning, executing and analysing experiments
  • Able to troubleshoot and solve challenging problems
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • lexible team player and comfortable in fast paced start-up environment
  • Highly self-motivated and flexible in working schedule to accommodate weekend work when necessary
  • Authorized to legally work in US

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2+ year of relevant industry experience
  • Experience with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cell (ESC/hiPSC) culture
  • Experience with transcriptomic analysis, single cell RNASeq, computational biology, bioinformatics
  • Experience and knowledge of pancreatic islet biology, diabetes and /or metabolic diseases
  • Experience with genome editing tools such as CRISPR is preferred
